Papel Picado Workshop

Learning Together Through Papel Picado

At OLAX, learning about culture can be fun, creative, and something everyone can enjoy. During our papel picado workshop, community members came together to learn how to cut colorful paper designs that can be used to make flowers and decorations for future events, including Día de los Muertos, Una Noche Mexicana, and Cinco de Mami, a local celebration that combines Cinco de Mayo and Mother’s Day.

One of the best things about the workshop was seeing people help each other learn. My aunt Alicia, my aunt Gabi, and Marina helped Andrea, who was attending the workshop for the first time, understand how to cut papel picado. It was a great example of how people in our community can share their skills and help others learn something new.

You do not need any experience to participate. Community members of all ages are welcome, and you can learn as you go! People who already know how to make papel picado can teach others, helping keep this creative tradition alive and passing it on to more people.

What Is OLAX?

OLAX, Organización Latinx de Borrego Springs, is a local nonprofit dedicated to celebrating culture, supporting families, and creating educational opportunities in Borrego Springs. OLAX is about bringing people together, sharing traditions, and building a stronger community where everyone has a chance to participate and learn.

We are always looking for volunteers who want to share their time, talents, and ideas. Whether you enjoy arts and crafts, helping at community events, or supporting local families, there are many ways to get involved.

You do not need special skills to make a difference. Sometimes, all it takes is a willingness to learn, lend a hand, and be part of the community.
